The Joy of Upgrading Classic Cars
I recently completed a Borgeson power steering conversion on my 1957 Ford Thunderbird. This upgrade completely changed the driving experience. The steering is now tighter, more responsive, and far more confidence-inspiring at highway speeds. Best of all, it keeps the classic character of the car intact.
Understanding the Original System
Like many Thunderbirds of this era, mine originally used the factory ram-assist power steering system. This system had its charm, but it lacked the precision I desired. Converting to the Borgeson integral steering box required more than simply bolting in a new gearbox.
The Conversion Process
The steering column needed to be shortened. I chose to use a universal joint instead of the traditional rag joint. This setup worked very well. However, I did notice a small amount of pump noise transferring through the steering column due to the more direct connection.
Attention to Detail
One detail I was particularly happy with was routing the factory horn wire through the universal joint. It worked without any binding issues. I would strongly recommend leaving plenty of slack in the wire so it can naturally twist around the steering shaft during normal driving.
Mock-Up Before Assembly
Another important lesson was to mock up everything before final assembly. Steering box placement, linkage geometry, and exhaust clearance all need to be checked carefully before tightening things down permanently. This step is crucial to avoid any surprises later.
The Result: A Modern Feel with Classic Charm
Overall, the Borgeson conversion gave the car a much more modern steering feel while preserving the personality of the original Thunderbird. I would definitely recommend the upgrade!
